Students have campus upgrade ideas for UDM

You may have noticed University of Detroit Mercy is having quite the “glow up” as some would say between the new “Titans” sign, building renovations and much more to come. The McNichols Campus Renovation Project began in late 2020 with the renovation and expansion of the Student Union, followed by the demolition of the Fisher Administration Center and Reno Hall.

University of Detroit Mercy students even have their own ideas to add onto the McNichols Campus Renovation Project. Here is some feedback the UDM students gave Varsity News when asked “What else could be done to make campus even better for current and prospective students?” Their responses range anywhere from food to firepits to athletics.

Katherine Mutschler, Senior

“I think the move to bring more art on campus with new murals was definitely a step in the right direction. I’d love to see more sculptures on campus, or really any piece of art that can stand the harsh winters we have here. I think by continuing to prioritize fun as well as functionality, the University of Detroit Mercy will foster a beautiful welcoming atmosphere in which academic excitement will be encouraged.”

Favour Nwaneri, Senior

“I would like more fun places to hang out on campus besides the Student Union. Games in the Student Union are locked in a room at night, and no one can use them over the weekend because student life is closed.”

Chanel Eboh, Freshman

“Keys are always tricky and can get stuck in the doors. I love how our student ids open most doors…but they do not open all. I think they should put a student ID scanning machine on the stair doors in all the dorms. The student IDs open the doors easily with one tap, so zero struggle. This would make getting up to your dorm a lot easier and faster.”

Reese Burns, Freshman

“I think there should be more stuff added outside for friends to hangout! I would like a circle firepit for me and my friends to make smores and chat at night. Having a firepit on campus sounds like a great idea for the kids on campus to go circle around and get closer with one another. Nothing like late night bonfire chats with just you, your friends and smores.”

Marisa Cantu, Freshman

“I think the thing that is most needed on campus is air conditioning, especially in Shiple Hall where I live. I find it very hard to fall asleep sometimes during the hot nights, and a little fan can only do so much.”

Grant Geondrezick, Senior

“There’s no air conditioning in Calihan Hall, and as member of the Detroit Mercy basketball team I think air is a staple in areas where you are exercising and creating body heat.”

Anaum Khan, Freshmen

“The cafeteria dinner ends too early for me. I am one of those people who lives in a house where family dinner is at 9 p.m. Since it closes at 6:30-7 p.m. I am usually still snack throughout the rest of the night.”

Mak Manciel, Senior

“I think that it is pretty cool that the University of Detroit Mercy loves being able to find treasure within their original roots of keeping the older basketball culture alive within the school and throughout the entire fanbase/community, but as time moves on and other gyms within our same conference are putting upgrades onto them basketball gyms, I think it is time we make a change as well to ours.”
