OPINION: ‘It Ends With Us’ drama-filled on and off screen

The movie “It Ends with Us” starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni took over the box office and viewers’ hearts. The movie was released on Aug. 9 and has brought in almost $300 million.

The movie is based on a novel written by Colleen Hoover who wrote the novel about the relationship between her mother and father.

In the movie, Lively’s character Lily Bloom moves to Boston to live out her dream of opening her own floral shop. While in Boston she meets a man named Ryle Kincaid played by Baldoni and soon falls in love.

But as we move on in the film Ryle displays abusive actions that remind her of her parents’ relationship growing up. Once Lily is settled in Boston her first love reenters her life unexpectedly and causes her current relationship to suffer.

Throughout the movie we see Lily struggle with generational domestic violence, whether it was towards her or the people around her.

Many people who have watched the movie believe that the representation of domestic violence in the movie is not done well.

Along with the inaccurate representation of domestic violence, Lively’s acting in the film does not seem to align with what a real victim goes through. In the film, Lively’s life just seems to move on like nothing happened. It does not seem realistic whatsoever.

Lily naming her child after a family member of her abuser does not line up with what accurately represents the aftermath of leaving an abusive relationship.

Because of the lack of decent acting, it has sparked many conversations on social media. Fans have speculated that Lively has not promoted the movie in the right way and has steered away from the core meaning of the movie.

It seems that it was being promoted almost as a 2000s chick flick movie where you should bring all of your friends. Lively was also seen promoting her hair care line along with having a cocktail party with the theme of her new movie featuring drinks named after Lily’s abuser in the movie.

With Lively’s misleading promotion of the movie, there have also been speculations that there has been drama between Baldoni and Lively, which makes a sequel of the movie seem impossible.

Baldoni and Lively have been seen not interacting as much as people expected them to and there are reports of an apparent fight that happened on set. Other cast members don’t even follow Baldoni on social media.

Baldoni then released a post on social media regarding a ‘survivor love and support letter.’

“You embody resilience and courage, qualities that shine bright even on the darkest days. In the tapestry of your life, each thread tells a story of endurance, strength, and hope,” Baldoni wrote.

With the film being released for almost a month, it has gotten lots of attention from the media, but not all of it has been good attention. Fans have thrown backlash towards the cast because of inaccuracies in portraying domestic violence in relationships.
