For Canadian students, two choices

TITAN GOLFER JAMES HILL IS AMONG THE DETROIT MERCY STUDENTS LIVING IN CANADA DURING THE PANDEMIC.

This semester is going to be different for Detroit Mercy’s Canadian students

Being Canadian and living in Canada and now starting school online from home instead of being on campus has already presented challenges.

It feels very different than school used to feel.

We face different rules being from Canada during these times.

We are presented with two options:

* Option one is to begin on campus and not come back home until the end of the year.

* Option two is to stay home until it is necessary for us to go back to campus.

This is because of our mandatory 14-day quarantine rule.

If we were to come back home from campus to visit family, we would have to wait 14 days to do so once we get here. By law, we have to quarantine ourselves once we arrive home from another country – or even another province.

This would make it extremely hard if we were on campus and needed to go home to Canada for an emergency.

Because of this, many Canadian students that I know are choosing to live at home and do strictly online schooling. And it is a huge transition.

Online classes are not new to me or other Canadians at Detroit Mercy but it isn't the same, either.

It already feels more difficult than ever to stay on top of your work and manage your schedule receiving five to ten emails a day from professors.

It can cause great confusion at times.

Being next door to the United States, makes it even harder.

Knowing that I am right here able to attend my school, attend normal classes and office hours.

Not every country has the same rules as Canada, so we as Canadians will have to find other methods to pursue our studies and to maintain great academic status while working remotely from home.

Two of my golf teammates are in the same boat as I am.

They are Canadian and living at home for the entire semester until we are asked to come back to compete in sports again.

Until then we are limited by those two options.
