The Calgary Roughnecks have made Kyle Waters the first Detroit Mercy lacrosse player ever selected in the first round of any pro lacrosse league.
After being a redshirt freshman in 2019, Waters started all five games of the Covid-shortened season as a rookie last year.
Waters led the Titans with 11 goals. He was also second in assists (five) and points (16).
His most impressive feature was bursting onto the scene during his collegiate debut with a monster five-goal, six-point game against Jacksonville.
The game also included the winning goal with under 2 minutes to play.
After the shortened season, Waters competed in the Brooklin Lacrosse Club in the month leading up to the National Lacrosse League (NLL) draft.
Roughnecks GM Mike Board took Waters with the sixth overall pick in the NLL draft.
“We were happy to acquire a big, right-handed offensive player who can create space for his teammates and put the ball in the net,” said Board.
Board also said that he didn’t think Waters would be available at pick six.
Despite coming off an NLL championship, the expectation with the Roughnecks is that everyone will be given an opportunity to earn a spot in the coming season – especially after the loss of MVP forward Dane Dobbie, who signed with the San Diego Seals.
Perhaps Kyle Waters can fill his spot.
